Only thirty minutes from Medford, Historic Jacksonville Oregon has managed to preserve living as it was generations ago.<\/p>\n

Today, Jacksonville is a sleepy appearing town, preserved as an encapsulation of the time around the turn of the 20th century.<\/p>\n

In 1966 the entire town of 2,200 residents was declared a National Historic Landmark District<\/a><\/strong>. It was the first area of Oregon to be designated as such. Not long ago, the National Trust for Historic Preservation acclaimed it one of the United States\u2019 twelve most distinctive places to visit. Jacksonville has mild winters making it a year round destination. And though we said it appeared sleepy, it is anything but, with a rich year round performing arts agenda and many things for outdoor recreation.<\/p>\n

Historic Homes of Jacksonville<\/span><\/h6>\n

The boom period that typifies the historic Oregon image  is Jacksonville from about 1850 until 1925. First homes were nothing more than one room cabins, as the need for more space grew and money allowed, these cabins were expanded, generally in the architectural style that was predominant at the time of the renovation. When strolling through the residential areas of Jacksonville, one sees homes that are combinations of many styles or, if built later, a single style. These historic homes include elements of the following styles of architecture; Classical Revival, Craftsman, Gothic Revival and Italianate.<\/p>\n

What to do in Jacksonville <\/span><\/h6>\n

Tours<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Pick up a brochure at the Jacksonville Visitor Center map<\/a> and then begin a walking tour of the historic business district, the historic homes and the things to do in Southern Oregon. These tours are self-guided, audio tour rental units are also available at the Visitor Center.<\/p>\n

If you prefer, trolley tours are also available of the historical downtown commercial district and the some of the historical homes.<\/p>\n

Jacksonville Woodland Trails<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Hikers and nature lovers can enjoy the 16 miles of woodland trails covering 320 acres without ever leaving Jacksonville. These trails are maintained by the Jacksonville Woodland Trails Association and offer hikers a wonderful series of trails to explore. See an abundant amount of wild life and wild flowers while never leaving town.<\/p>\n

During summer and early fall, Jacksonville is host to thousands of music aficionados who enjoy all types of music performed on the world-famous Britt stage known for its remarkable natural acoustics. The venue is a amphitheater, created by nature and surrounded by beautiful ponderosa pines and madrones. Located on the estate of 19th<\/sup> century photographer Peter Britt, music offerings include jazz, folk, rock, classical, dance and country.<\/p>\n

Oregon Shakespeare Festival<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Only fifteen miles south of town is Ashland, home to the world-famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival.<\/a> Not only are the Bard\u2019s classics performed during this eight month festival, but also there is modern drama and comedy. Performances can be seen at matinees and evening performance.<\/p>\n

Shopping is upscale in Jacksonville. There are three antique stores, art galleries, and a plethora of boutique specialty shops. In fact, Jacksonville is a shopping magnet for residents of the entire county.<\/p>\n
